Predecessor | Ford Mustang (second generation) |
Successor | Ford Mustang (fourth coevals) |
The third-generation Mustang was produced by Ford from 1978 until 1993. Being stacked on Ford's Pull a fast one on platform, it is commonly referred to as the Fox body Mustang. It evolved finished several sub-models, trim levels, and drivetrain combinations during its yield life. Information technology underwent updates for 1987, and for a time seemed destined for replacement with a front-wheel drive Mazda platform. However, company executives were swayed by consumer judgment and the rear-wheel drive Mustang stayed, while the front-roulette wheel driveway version was renamed the Ford Probe. Enthusiasts group the generation into cardinal segments: the 1979–1986 cars, with their space headlight arrangement, and the 1987–1993 cars, with their aerodynamic composite headlamps and head-on fascia styling. Output complete with the intromission of the fourth-coevals Mustang (SN-95) for the 1994 model year.
1979–1982 [edit out]
1979 Ford Mustang notchback coupe
The 1979 model year Mustang was supported the Fox platform. This chassis was "Ford's initiative to build a one-size-fits-all car to serve as a two-door sports car and a four-doorway fellowship car" with its initial use by the larger Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr Gemini the Twins that debuted in the 1978 model year.[5] "Gerald R. Ford built the 1979 Mustang around a political platform IT would share with more humble cars in the Lincoln-Mercury-Ford corporate family in order to keep developing and construction costs down."[6] Consistency styles for the Mustang included a 2-door sedan chair (coupe) and 3-room access sedan (hatchback). Two trig levels were accessible: the base mock up and the more luxurious Ghia model. The wheelbase was 5 in (127 mm) shorter than the Fairmont/Zephyr series at 100.5 in (2,553 mm) (nearly the same as the outgoing Continent Ford Capri and over 4 in (102 mm) longer than the Mustang II).
Cobra [edit out]
1981 Ford Madox Ford Mustang Cobra hatchback
The Cobra appearance package also made its debut in 1979 and would continue through both the 1980 and 1981 model old age. The 1979 Cobra (17,579 produced) featured smutty grille, trim, and moldings (except the sail panels that were painted trunk discolour), as well as unclean depress physical structure paint. The threshold handles, threshold locks, antenna, and roof drip rail were bright. Emblazon-coordinated dual pinstripes in the wraparound body-side moldings and bumpers, as well as COBRA decals on the doors, were standard. All 1979 Cobras came stocked with a small, center mount non-functioning toughie scoop shovel (to cater clearance for the air cleaner referable the 2.3L Turbo extra height). The Cobra hood decal was optional for 1979. Rise spoilers were not included on the 1979 models, as they made their debut on the middle-year introduction of the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car replica. The 1980 Cobra (5,550 produced) and the 1981 Cobra (1,821 produced) received a inexperienced front bumper and air dkm with fog lights, non-operable cowl-type hood Georgia home boy, and rear spoiler (all carried concluded from the earlier Gait Car replicas). Graphics included belt-crinkle stripes, a redesigned hood decal, and "COBRA" decals happening both the side quarter windows and the rear spoiler. Exterior cut bac on both the 1980 and 1981 Cobras was black, including the door handles, key locks, antenna, and sweep through panels.
Interior Cobra particularized parts along all 1979-1981 Cobras included "Engine Overturned" dash bezels and three COBRA emblems - one in each room access instrument panel and one connected the rider side dash bezel.
Drivetrains in the 1979 model year consisted of the 2.3L (140 cu in) four-piston chamber Turbo locomotive engine, rated at 131 horsepower, with a Borg Charles Dudley Warner four-speed hand-operated transmission or a 5.0L (302 copper in) V8, rated at 140 hp, with an 4-quicken manual overdrive transmittance or a 3-speed automatic infection. For the 1980 model year exclusively, the 2.3L four-piston chamber Turbo engine was available with an ex gratia three-zip automatic drive, although the four-pelt along manual was still standard. The 5.0L V8 was replaced with a 4.2 (255 cubic inch) V8, rated at 118 horsepower, with a 3-speed self-acting contagion. For the 1981 model class, the powertrains list was expanded to include a naturally aspirated 2.3L locomotive engine and a 3.3L (200 cu in) I6 engine. The 2.3L Turbo engine was only available in Canada, the automatic drive was no more facultative, and the foursome-speed manual transmission was replaced by an overdrive five-speed manual transmission system made aside Tremec (model VS140). The 4.2L V8 also remained nonobligatory in 1981, rated this time at 120 horsepower.
Indianapolis Pace Cars [edit]
1979 Mustang Indianapolis 500 pace car
The Ford Mustang was elect as the Administrative body Pace Car of the 1979 Indianapolis 500. Ford commemorated this event with a mid-year "Indy 500" Step Car version (10,479 produced). All were finished in two-note pewter and black with orange tree and red graphics. The front goal featured a unique front air dam with fog lights, and a unabridged cowling type hood scoop, patc the fanny was available with a new for 1979 rear mollycoddler (all of these additions carried over to both the 1980 and 1981 Cobra). The black interior faced Recaro seats with patterned black and white inserts. Obtainable were the 2.3L (140 cu in) four-cylinder Turbo with a quadruplet-pelt along manual transmission or the 5.0L (302 cu in) V8 with either an 4-belt along manual overdrive Beaver State 3-speed automatic transmission. The production cars included a sunshine-roof. Nonetheless, the three real pace cars were fitted with a T-top away Cars &adenosine monophosphate; Concepts of Brighton, MI. The removable panel roof option would non become an available option until the 1981 model year.[4]
GT [edit]
1982 Gerald R. Ford Mustang GT hatchback
In 1982, the Cobra framework was born in favour of the Mustang GT, which returned after 13 years. This would garner the slogan, "The Hirer is Rearward!" This radical GT model conspicuous a re-engineered 157 hp (117 kW; 159 PS) High Output 5.0L (302 atomic number 29 in) locomotive with new valves, a more aggressive Cam River (from a 1973 351W Torino application), a larger two-barrel carburettor, a altered firing order, and a break breathing intake and play out system. The dual-snorkel air cleaner was emblazoned with "5.0 Liter H.O." inscription, indicating that this was no so-so 302. The GT included the front air dam with fog lamps and the rear spoiler from the 1979 Pace Car and the 1980 and 1981 Cobras. However, the filled-length toughie scoop from those models did not carry over and the smaller 1979 Cobra hood scoop made its return happening the GT. Solitary four colors were offered on the GT exemplary, and they consisted of black, bright red (mid-year introduction), dark red, and silver. The 5.0L was available on lower-trim models; L, GL, and GLX. It also formed the basis for the "SSP" (Special Service Software system) cars that were used by government and police/law enforcement, and were near exclusively ordered in the 2-threshold sedan body style.
Powertrains [edit]
Engines for the 1979–1982 models included the 88 HP (66 kW) 2.3 L Pinto inline-quaternity, 109 hp (81 kW) 2.8 L Cologne V6 (made by Ford Madox Ford of Germany), and the 140 hp (104 kW) Ford slim block locomotive 5.0L locomotive with its front fenders badged as much. All were carried over from the Mustang Cardinal line. Curtly after the model year started an 89 hp (66 kilowatt) 3.3 L straight-six locomotive engine was in stock. Supplies of the 2.8 L V6 proved deficient preeminent to it being discontinued in late 1979. A new 132 hp (98 kW) 2.3 L turbo four-cylinder, debuted that offered similar H.P. to the V8. The 2.3 and 2.3 turbo, as well as the V8 models, could also be optioned with the newly developed TRX handling suspension that included Michelin 390 millimetre tires and accompanying rhythmical-cookie-sized wheels.
Following the second oil crisis in 1979, the 5.0L engine was born in favor of a 4.2L (255 cu in) V8 that delivered better fuel saving. The 255 was the only V8 offered in 1980 and 1981. Au fon a sleeved-down 5.0L, it produced 120 hp (89 kW), the worst power of all time for a Mustang V8. The 255 was mated only with the three-speed automatic transmission. This meant the 2.3L Turbo was the sole "performance" engine. The turbo 2.3, plagued with reliability issues, was an option through 1981. Information technology was dropped for 1982 in the United States, while remaining open in Canada. An improved version would return in the new-for-1983 Turbo GT. The Traction-Lok limited-pillowcase differential was available first in 1981, with all engine combinations. A Tremec five-speed manual selection arrived late during the 1980 mannikin year, available only with the 2.3-liter quaternion-cylinder engines.[7]
1983–1986 [edit]
While most of the Mustang was carried over in late 1982 for 1983, there were about changes and improvements on the then young "Fox-platform" model. The front fascia was restyled with a more rounded pry and reshaped grille. New, wider level taillights with dedicated chromatic turn signals replaced the vertical sectioned units. This was also the first Mustang to use the "Blue Oval" Ford emblem on the out, both front and rear. Ford added a convertible to the Mustang line for 1983, later on a nine-year absence. The majority of the convertibles were equipped with the new 3.8 L (232 cu in) Essex which replaced the 3.3 L (200 copper in) I6 engine. The 5.0L (302 cu in) V8 locomotive received a four-barrel carburetor and a modern intake manifold, delivery power to 175 hp (130 kW). The 2.3L 4-piston chamber Turbo also returned mid-year 1983, now fuel-injected, and producing 145 H.P. (108 kilowatt). Sales of the Turbo GT were injured by a higher base price merely lower performance than the 4.9 L (302 cu in).
For 1984, the GL and GLX were dropped, going away the L, GT, and Turbo GT while adding new additions, the LX and SVO. Gerald R. Ford also recognized the 20th Day of remembrance of the Mustang with the G.T.350, essentially a limited run of GTs and Turbo GTs. A add together of 5,260 G.T.350 hatchback and commutable models were built, all trimmed with Oxford White exteriors and Canyon-Red interiors. They featured red G.T.350 rock 'n' roll musician stripes and tri-bar Pony emblems on the front fenders. Two 5.0L V8 engines were available, a carbureted version (with manual infection only), operating theater a new 165 H.P. (123 kW) electronically fuel-injected engine (with automatic transmission simply). A brand-new "Quadra-Shock" rear suspension, which replaced the slapper bars with horizontally mounted axle shocks, became available later a couple of months of production. After 1984, the TRX option was retired for the Mustang.
The new Mustang SVO appeared best in 1984 and was produced through 1986. The 2.3 L turbocharged inline-4 produced ab initio 175 hp (130 kilowatt) for 1984, uprated to 205 hp (153 kW) beginning halfway through the 1985 model year, and ending with 200 hp (149 kW) for 1986. Four-rack magnetic disk brakes, 16-column inch wheels, and an SVO-specific bi-plane rear spoiler were a few of the differences 'tween the SVO and the rest of the Mustang line. The unparalleled front fascia featured an offset cowl intake duct for the turbo intercooler and a grille-less nose with sunken single rectangular sealed beam headlamps, flush inboard parking lamps, and wraparound outer turn-signal lamps. The front stop was intended to use efflorescenc aerodynamic composite headlamps with replaceable bulbs, simply these had not been authorized by the US Sprinkle in time for production. Aero headlamps eventually appeared on the 1985½ SVO.
Hagerty (Policy), specializing in classic cars, calls the introduction of the first 200 hp (149 kW; 203 PS) Mustang in 1985 the end of the Malaise geological era in American auto innovation. [8]
For 1985, the first fascia was restyled with a lattice-less nose out with a horizontal air intake slot. The Mustang GT acceptable new E5AE cylinder heads, a revised Holley four-barrel carburetor, a new and many aggressive rolling wave camshaft (only in models with the manual of arms transmission), less regulative exhaust manifolds, and a sham-twofold eat which brought more power to a conservatively rated 210 hp (157 kW) engine. This would Be the last carbureted V8 in the Mustang. The 1985 model twelvemonth dropped the L and Turbo GT, leaving the LX, GT, and SVO models. For 1986, Ford released the first multiport fire-injected 5.0L V8, rated at 200 hp (149 kilowatt; 203 PS).
1986 Ford Hermann Hueffer Mustang GT 5.0 T-top
In 1986, the Mustang GT sawing machine drivetrain upgrades including a new 10.5-column inch (upgraded from 10") clutch. A 7.5-inch rear-final stage continued in 2.3L, 2.3L turbo, and 3.8L applications, only 5.0L models enclosed a new 8.8-inch unit. Central fuel injection system was used along the not-turbo 2.3 in automatic versions, but was dropped the following class and replaced with a more efficient multi-port fuel injection. The rear center high-mounted brake light was now mounted connected the now-standard rear spoiler for hatchbacks, inwardly the bottom of the rear window of the coupe, and on the rear edge the textbook roof rack on convertibles.
Engines [edit]
Engines for the 1983–1986 models enclosed the 2.3 L, the 2.3 L turbo - now fuel-injected and available only in the Turbo GT and SVO, the 3.8 L Essex V6, and the High Output (H.O.) 5.0L V8 engine, with a new quartet-barrel carburettor made by Holley. The 3.3 L straightarrow-six locomotive engine was dropped after the 1982 model year.
Transmissions [cut]
Transmission availability varied behind the H.O. 5.0L for each one year. The Tremec quatern-speed blue-collar overuse (SROD) carried over from the 1982 model twelvemonth and was the standard transmission stern the 5.0L in 1983. Not long subsequently the 1983 model year started, the "standard duty" Borg Warner five-velocity manual overdrive transmission (T-5) became available and it was past the stick shift behind the 5.0L engine, with the SROD becoming facultative - with an invoice credit - for the remainder of the model year. For model class 1984, the four-speed automatic overdrive (AOD) transmittance became available for the first time in the Mustang model blood, and information technology was available behind the 5.0L engine only with throttle-body electronic fuel injection (called 'Central Fuel injection system' or CFI). The T-5 was hush available with the 4V carb induction system. For model class 1985, the Borg Warner T-5 transmission was upgraded by Borg Warner to "Troubling Responsibility" status, too called "World Class". The WC T-5 was still sole available with the 4V generalization system. The AOD transmission was also still only available with CFI induction carried over from 1984 but shortly after the model year started it received the eat up system from the 4V/T-5 engine, and a 15 hp bump. In 1986 the H.O. 5.0L engine was now sequentially fire-injected (SEFI), and came with both the automatic and manual transmissions.

Motorsport [edit]
The Mustang became President For's main contender in the early years of Group A traveling car racing in Europe and Australia. However, the 302 Cu in (4.9 L) V8 locomotive was not a contender in the various European championships but replaced in 1985 by the turbocharged Ford Scomberomorus sierra XR4Ti.
Australian Dick Johnson purchased two Mustangs built past the German Zakspeed team in mid-1984 for use through 1985 and 1986 Australian Road Car seasons as Ford Australia did not homologate either the Australian built Ford Xe Falcon or its surrogate, the XF Falcon, for racing. Dr. Johnson had a race gain ground in the Radical A support race for the 1985 Australian Magisterial Prix, as well as several placings in the 1985 and 1986 Aboriginal Australian Touring Railroad car Championships. The Mustang's competitive life in Type A came to an end at the end of 1986 and was replaced in 1987 away the Continent intentional turbocharged Ford Sierra RS Cosworth.
Mexico [cut]
1983 Ford Mustang coupé, North American nation marketplace version
The Discombobulat body Mustang was manufactured in Ford's Cuatitlan Itzcalli flora (set in Ciudad de Mexico) from 1979 to 1984. Some the coupe and the hatchback body styles were offered. These Mexican-improved Mustangs had a hybrid appearance from 1981 until 1984, using some Mercury Capri organic structure parts.
1979–1982 [edit]
The 1981 and 1982 models (coupe and hatchback) received horizontally-ribbed Capri taillights, plus a Capri presence fascia for the 1982 model.
1983–1984 coupe [edit out]
The 1983 mock up had a Capri front fascia, whereas the 1984 model had the standard Mustang front fascia. A 1984 SVO coupe was also offered complete with SVO taillights.
1983–1984 hatchback door [edit]
The Capri body stylus was used for the 1983–1984 hatchback models which faced a "belch" glass hatch liftgate, Capri taillights, and Capri wide fenders, although 1984 models had the regular Mustang front fascia. An SVO option was available for the 1984 manakin.
Proposed replacement [edit]
Away the mid-1980s, Mustang sales were slumping. Sales were over 100,000 units a year, but were minimum compared to previous Book of Numbers. Ford believed that the Mustang had lost its place in the market. They subsequently announced that they would replace the rear-wheel drive Mustang with a Mazda-derived frontal-wheel-force back variation. Mustang fans quickly responded and sent Ford hundreds of thousands of letters, request them to proceed production of the rear-wheel around drive Mustang. Ford responded by continued production of the rear-wheel ride Mustang, and proceeded to rename the front-bike-drive out version as the Probe, which ended upward being a replacement for the Escort-based Ford EXP.[9]
1987–1993 [edit]
1989 Ford Mustang Sixty Coupe
In Venerable 1986, the Mustang received a facelift for the 1987 model year on both the midland and exterior. The front end was restyled to look more than like the SVO which gave the automobile much of an "Aero" look, in keeping with Ford's gross modern styling focal point. The interior received an all-new dash, center console, and amended invest and doorway trim. With the SVO discontinued, models were immediately pared down to Threescore and GT. Taillights on the 60 were revised with shed light on lenses for the turn signals while the GT in real time wore particular body-colored triad louvered lenses. The poop glass windows lost their louvers and now sported a single larger flush piece of glass lettered with "Mustang" at the bottom rear corners. The GT models featured untried round fog lamps and gained aerodynamic lower bodyside encircling too every bit new turbine mode 15-edge (380 mm) wheels. The 302 cu in (4.9 L) Mustangs became popular with the aftermarket performance industry.[10] The V6 option was discontinued while the 2.3 L quatern-cylinder gained fuel injection system, leaving only the 2.3 L four-cylinder and the 302 cu in (4.9 L) V8.
V8-powered Mustangs standard E7TE heads and bad aluminum pistons with valve reliefs in 1987, Eastern Samoa conflicting to the insipid-super used in the previous year.[11] The E7 cylinder heads were sourced from the motortruck parentage after the 1986 swirl-port conception demonstrated public presentation problems. Power ratings increased to 225 hp (168 kW) and 300 ft⋅lbf (410 N⋅m) of torsion. No major changes were seen for 1988, although the T-top roof option for hatchbacks was discontinued midyear.
For 1989, the Mustang's speed density computing system was replaced with a mass air organization (1988 Mustangs sold in California too had the MAF organization). This change slightly reduced manufacturing plant H.P., but it made Mustangs much easier to modify. With the mass air system, changes made to the intake, locomotive, and exhaust system would Be recognised and compensated for by the ECU, subsequent in a correct melody/fuel ratio and optimum power. Ford's only gesture at a 25th Anniversary Mustang was a small, rider-side dashboard emblem with galloping-horse logotype affixed to all models built 'tween 27 Adjoin 1989, and the end of model-year 1990.[12] Finally, in 1989, Ford resources began to revolve about the next Mustang, due to its debut in late 1993.[13] Direct its retirement in 1993, there would be few changes in the model line, but the changes would be modality.
For 1990, Mustang added a unweathered steering wheel featuring an airbag, and a revised lower number one wood's-side dash panel with knee bolster up. The available tilt-steering roulette wheel, however, was interrupted in favou the revised airbag-equipped steering column. A limited run of 4.9 L (302 cu in) equipped LX convertibles - entirely painted Emerald Green metallic with albescent convertible tops, Oxford Andrew Dickson White leather interiors featuring GT seats, and 15" turbine admixture wheels - were produced for an NCAA half-courtroom shot contest, sponsored by soda brand 7-Up, merely the event was canceled shortly before it was scheduled to begin. Gerald Rudolph Ford, already having produced 4,103 vehicles (2,743 with the AOD four-speed automatic overdrive, and 1,360 with the T-5 five-speed manual transmission), released them for bargainer availability. Revamped interior draw and quarter panels for the 1990 model year did gone with the side armrests for nates seat passengers, merely gained hulking verbaliser panels. Door map pockets and clear coat paint also became standard for the 1990 Mustang, along with the availableness of optional leather interior trim.
The 1991 model yr changes to the 2.3 L I4 engines included an increase in horsepower (from 88 to 105) due to a amended piston chamber head with two set off plugs per cylinder. Base-manakin Mustang prices exceeded $10,000 for the firstly time, and gross revenue began to drop. A revised roof for the convertible allowed the top to fold closer to the body. V8-equipped models received new 16" five-spoke 'star' alloy rims.
In 1993, Ford switched to cast hypereutectic pistons for all 302 atomic number 29 in (4.9 L) engines and also ray-rated the GT to 205 hp (153 kW) and 275 foot⋅lbf (373 N⋅m) of torque. This estimate was more accurate given the previous power ratings were ready-made in front the addition of the mass flow of air organisation, minor revisions in the camshaft visibility, and other various small changes made throughout the production prevail. The individual as exponent window switches, affixed inside the one-fourth jury loudspeaker system grilles in the stake seat of convertible models, were distant. Hold in for the rear power Windows was now relegated to the driver's door switch panel. The black bumper rub strips and side moldings on LX models were today body-colored. Similar to the 1990 7-Up Mustang, for 1992, Ford produced 3,333 specialised Spring-edition (1992-1/2) LX 4.9 L (302 cu in) convertible with a Vibrant Red exterior and Oxford Bloodless leather interiors. Likewise for 1993, Limited Edition models conspicuous a Chrome Yellow exterior with black or white leather interior, or a Reverberant white exterior with whitened leather midland. Under the newly established Ford SVT division, the 1993 Gerald Ford Mustang SVT Cobra was offered with the 302 cu in (4.9 L) V8 that produced 235 hp (238 Postscript; 175 kW) at 5000 rpm and 285 lb⋅ft (386 N⋅m) of torsion at 4000 rpm. Featuring more hushed styling than the GT, the Cobra used Ford's new GT-40 falsetto-performance engine equipment. A Cobra R exemplar was also produced for 1993 that used the Saami engine as the standing Cobra. It faced larger brakes, Koni shocks and struts, engine oil tank, power steering cooler, and backside seat delete. Options such as air conditioner and a stereo system were non available along the Cobra R. Production of the third-generation Mustang concluded in Sep 1993. The 1993 Mustang was the low for a Cd participant to comprise optional from the mill. Finally, 1993 also marked the end of the "official" SSP Constabulary/government Mustangs, though whatever agencies continued buying classic Mustangs for underground or highway interceptor utilize.
